In the Ukraine war, the government in Kiev currently sees its troops in a “very difficult moment at the front”. Bitter fighting raged in the Donbass in the east of the country, especially, Foreign Minister Dmytro Kuleba said on Wednesday at the World Economic Forum in Davos. “The Battle of Donbass is very similar to the battles of World War II.” The city of Severodonetsk is “surrounded” from three sides. In a video message (see above), President Volodymyr Zelenskyi expressed disappointment at the response of the world community.
“Some towns and cities just don’t exist anymore,” Kuleba told journalists in Switzerland. “They have been reduced to rubble by Russian artillery fire and Russian missile launch systems.” According to him, Ukraine urgently needs missile launch systems to deal with the Russian attackers.
Kuleba (pictured below) explained in Davos that Russia is superior to Ukraine when it comes to heavy weapons. But Kiev’s troops have the biggest disadvantage with multiple rocket launcher systems, he said.
Zelenskyi disappointed with the response of the world community
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has called on the world community to more clearly side with his country under attack by Russia. In a video speech on Wednesday evening, he was disappointed, also by the deliberations at the World Economic Forum in Davos. Selenskyj, who was linked to Switzerland via video, accused Turkey and Hungary in particular of failing to show solidarity with his country.
“Whatever the Russian state is doing, there is someone who says: let’s take their interests into account,” Zelenskyy said in his video address. It was the same in Davos. “And this despite thousands of Russian missiles hitting Ukraine. Despite tens of thousands of Ukrainians killed. Despite Bucha and Mariupol.” Russia does this in the middle of Europe.
The Russian troops in the Donbass are apparently currently mainly concentrating on the strategically important industrial city of Severodonetsk. The situation is “very difficult” and there is “fighting already in the suburbs,” Governor Serhiy Gajdaj reported in online networks on Wednesday. “Russian troops are already close enough to fire mortar shells.” According to the governor, “the next week could be decisive”.
Severodonetsk “surrounded” from three sides
Circles of pro-Russian fighters supporting Moscow’s soldiers said Severodonetsk had been “surrounded” from three sides on Wednesday evening. The only bridge leaving the city is now under Russian control, they say. However, this information could not be verified initially.
