Thousands of people celebrated the winter solstice at the English stone monument Stonehenge. There they greeted the sunrise on Friday morning. Some came dressed up, for example with flower wreaths, feathers or other headdresses.
“It was wonderful to welcome around 6,000 people to Stonehenge this morning,” Rebecca Eade, from English Heritage, told the PA news agency. Thousands also watched online.
The days are now getting longer again
At the winter solstice the days become longer again. The stone circle of Stonehenge is one of the most famous sights in Britain. The stones are precisely aligned with the position of the sun during the summer and winter solstices.
It is believed that the two days have been celebrated there for thousands of years. It is still not clear what the Neolithic stone colossi were originally intended for. Stonehenge, for example, could serve as a healing place or observatory, scientists suspect.
