Large amounts of fresh snow and stormy winds dramatically increase the avalanche danger in the Tyrolean mountains! In some cases, warning level four of the five-part scale applies. “Extensive snowdrifts are forming that can very easily be released or come loose spontaneously,” experts emphasize.
Due to the very stormy conditions and the amount of fresh snow of more than one meter in the high mountains, the avalanche warning service of the state of Tyrol issued the second highest avalanche danger level (level 4 – high avalanche danger) for parts of Tyrol on Friday.
Critical situation until at least Sunday
The regions west of the Wipptal and the Hohe Tauern are particularly affected. At lower altitudes and in the Tyrolean lowlands, avalanche danger level 3 (significant avalanche danger) applies from Friday. This critical avalanche situation is expected to continue through Sunday.
“Be as defensive as possible”
“The best way to reduce the risk on the weekend is to be as defensive as possible, avoid steep slopes above 30 degrees and avoid run-out areas under steep slopes,” said Patrick Nairz, head of the avalanche warning service.
“We expect an increase in spontaneous avalanches during this period of intense precipitation. These will usually break in the area of the current old snow surface or in the fresh snowpack,” Nairz explains.
It probably won’t settle down until next week
Due to the “reasonably well-built old snow cover”, experts expect the situation to gradually calm down from next week.
