Tons of earth, rubble and entire trees slipped in Kirchberg ob der Donau (Upper Austria) on Sunday night. A historic building from 1521 was also completely destroyed by the masses. However, no one was injured in the accident, and there was a reason for that.
The affected building in Exlau, located next to the Danube, dates back to 1521. Over the centuries, the property was home to several high-ranking figures, including Nobel Prize winner for literature Heinrich Böll, peace activist Bertha von Suttner and monks from Neuhaus Castle.
The road was impassable
But now the building is completely destroyed. In the early morning hours around 4 a.m., the historic building in the municipality of Kirchberg ob der Donau was severely damaged by a devastating landslide. A resident discovered that the road was impassable due to the mass of earth when she went to pick up her son. The fire brigade arrived on site and cleared the road again.
Still a “miracle”
The owner of the house described the accident as a “little Christmas miracle”. In the days around Christmas the family actually lives in the building. Not this time: after the heavy snowfall in early December, the roof was damaged by a fallen tree and the hole was temporarily covered with a tarpaulin.
