On Christmas Eve, the Styrian fire brigades in Mooskirchen and Lieboch were called to a traffic accident involving a seriously injured woman. The rescuers arrived just a few minutes after the alarm – of course also at Christmas.
A motorist driving her car on the A2 towards Graz crashed into a concrete barrier shortly after the Mooskirchen motorway entrance.
The force of the impact caused the vehicle to overturn and slide several hundred meters along the roof of the concrete barrier.
Comrades were deployed only a short time after the alarm
Press officer Christian Gröblbauer describes details of the operation: “As the members of the fire brigade were celebrating the family Christmas celebrations at home, many comrades were very quickly in the armory and were able to arrive on the scene within a few minutes after the alarm. Because there was a suspicion of fire, the emergency services provided themselves with heavy breathing protection upon arrival.”
When they arrived on the scene, the driver was able to be freed from the vehicle with the help of passersby. The fire brigade of the Mooskirchen fire brigade immediately provided first aid to the injured person. At the same time, the accident site was secured and fire and privacy protection was set up.
Road closed for a short time
The accident vehicle was parked in a safe place and the roadway was cleared before the highway was reopened to traffic. During the operation the road was only closed for a short time before becoming a single lane. The traffic jam stretched for miles.
A special token of gratitude
“A driver stuck in a traffic jam spontaneously opened the window and presented one of our comrades with a generous donation with the words ‘Thank you for your work on Christmas Eve’,” says Gröblbauer, happy with this warm, Christmas gesture.
