A 65-year-old fell asleep in a retirement home in Feldkirchen (Carinthia) with a cigarette in his hand. Fire alarm!
The man lit a cigarette in the nursing home around 3:40 am on St. Stephen’s Day.
Meanwhile, sleep overtook the resident and he fell asleep in the foyer with a lighted cigarette in his hand.
“The cigarette probably fell from his hand onto the couch,” police said. The man then fell to the ground. A smoldering fire broke out. This was noticed by the home management, who responded quickly and extinguished the fire with water.
The 65-year-old was slightly injured when he fell from the couch and was subsequently taken to the Klagenfurt clinic with suspected smoke poisoning.
