In France, a 33-year-old is said to have murdered his wife and their four children. He was already known to the police for family violence and mental disorders (see video above).
The bodies of the 35-year-old woman and children aged nine months, four, seven and 10 years were discovered on Monday in their apartment in Meaux, near Paris. “The apartment showed no signs of forced entry and the father was not present,” prosecutor Jean-Baptiste Bladier continued. The officers received a tip from concerned family members. Neighbors eventually reported screaming on the ground floor on the night of December 25.
“Very violent crime scene”
After the alarm was raised, security forces broke into the ground floor apartment through a bedroom window. According to their own statement, they found a “very violent crime scene” there. The bodies were in different rooms and the woman and the two girls had suffered “a very large number of stab wounds”. The two youngest boys may have suffocated.
Suspected murderer under treatment since 2017
According to the Public Prosecution Service, the suspected murderer had been treated for depression and psychotic behavior since 2017. Four years ago he was arrested for stabbing his pregnant girlfriend in the shoulder blade and then trying to commit suicide. However, the woman refused to file a complaint against her partner. After this attack, the man underwent further treatment and the investigation was closed. The couple knew each other from school and eventually even got married.
According to a local resident, the murdered woman was friendly and “talked to everyone.” On Christmas Day, scores of people placed flowers in front of the family’s apartment.
Man arrested, interrogation to follow
The suspicious man was eventually arrested not far from the crime scene, just in front of his father’s house. According to the public prosecutor, he has not yet been interrogated, but he told the police that he knew ‘why he was arrested’. He is also said to have spoken ‘about his dissatisfaction and depression’. He had injuries to his hand when he was arrested.
A woman is murdered every three days
In France, on average, a woman is murdered every three days. Last year, 118 women were murdered by their partner or ex-partner. There have also been a number of recent child murders in the Paris region. For example, at the end of November, a 41-year-old confessed to killing his three daughters between the ages of four and 11. Activists accuse the police of not taking the problem seriously enough.
