In addition to 95 arrests, more than 100 charges were filed on Wednesday against the residents of the construction site on Wiener Stadtstrasse. As reported, activists climbed onto construction containers and vehicles in the morning hours, police arrived in droves and followed an hour-long evacuation. More than half of those arrested spent the night in detention.
As of Thursday morning, 58 of the 95 activists arrested were still in detention, but the number was decreasing hourly, police spokesman Markus Dittrich said at the request of the APA. Individuals may be detained for up to 24 hours solely to establish their identity.
But the investigation after the area was reoccupied – a protest camp in the area was only evicted by the executive in February – continues.

In addition to the 95 arrests, there are also 111 reports. According to Dittrich, the majority – namely 108 – relate to administrative violations, namely the lack of proof of identity. Three charges relate to criminal offences.
The controversial project has long been torpedoed by environmentalists. The immediate cessation of the construction project is required.
