The federation penalizes the Madrid club with relegation for the cause that cost Spain’s elimination from the World Cup and it will be the Sciences who fight for the cup
Follow the scandal in the battered Spanish rugby. Following Spain’s disqualification from the 2023 World Cup due to the misalignment of Alcobendas Rugby player, Gavin van den Berg, and after Spanish Rugby Federation (FER) President Alfonso Feijoo announced his resignation, the investigation and analysis of the case has ended with a resounding decision: the Madrid team, believed to have been involved in the alleged falsification of documents to obtain the nationalization of the South African player, has been demoted.
After considering the extraordinary file filed by the investigating judge of the case, as well as the allegations of the parties, the Federation’s National Disciplinary Sports Commission (CNDD) has decided to remove the Alcobendas Rugby Club from the 2021 Honor Division League. 2022 for the “amendment by members of said club of their player Gavin van den Berg’s document in order to obtain a competitive advantage”.
As a result of this resolution, the semi-finals for the title of the Liga de División de Honor that the Granota team aspired to play will be played by the Cisneros Complutense Rugby Club, its quarter-final rival who was suspended as a precaution, against the Santboiana Sports Union.
With regard to the final of the Copa de Rey, which should have taken place on 1 May at the La Cartuja Stadium in Seville, the CNDD has applied Article 36.4 of the FER Matches and Competitions Regulations. It states that “in knockout competitions, the dismissal or non-appearance will determine the classification of the other club, with the exception of the final match, the celebration of which is postponed as long as is essential, and the team that has won the knockout access to the last match, in which he resigns or does not appear”.
As Alcobendas eliminated Science in the semi-finals of the Cup, the Seville team will play the final against El Salvador de Valladolid on a date yet to be determined. An appeal is possible before this decision.
