The consequences of storm “Zoltan” will probably remain noticeable for a while: the mountain section of the Mariazellerbahn between Laubenbachmühle in Lower Austria and Mariazell (Bruck-Mürzzuschlag district) in Styria must remain closed until further notice.
According to the Lower Austrian Railways, the storm in recent days has toppled around 80 trees and caused extensive damage to the overhead lines along the 36-kilometre route. The work will likely take several weeks.
The actual damage is still unclear
“Only when all trees have been removed can an accurate assessment of the actual damage be made and restoration work commence,” the report said.
For the time that the route was closed, a replacement rail service with buses was set up between Laubenbachmühle and Mariazell, running at the same departure times as the Mariazellerbahn.
