According to the Austrian family report, couples are moving closer together again: there are more weddings and fewer divorces. On average, mothers have their first child at the age of 30.3.
Getting married is very trendy. The number of marriages increased from 41,111 in 2021 to 47,482 the year before. That is an increase of 15.5 percent. Meanwhile, the divorce rate continues to decline. With 13,997 ended marriages, the number of marriages in 2022 fell by 3.5 percent compared to 2021.
The age of mothers at the birth of their first child is constantly increasing. Last year, new mothers were on average 30.3 years old. By comparison, in the 1970s, new mothers were 22.8 years old. On average, a woman today has 1.41 children. 41.4 percent of all babies are born outside marriage. This number has quadrupled since 1960. There are a total of four million private households in Austria, of which 245,000 are single parents.
Married couples without children are the most common household type
The couple without children remains the most common household type in our country. This also applies to people who do not have children or whose children have already moved away.
Record numbers are registered in childcare. The care rate for children under the age of three increased from 22.9 percent in 2012 to 32.1 percent the year before. Last year this was already 95.4 percent for three to six year olds. There is also a new record for childcare allowance. It rose from 1.215 billion euros in 2021 to 1.238 billion euros.
