A suspected tornado has caused extensive damage in the Greater Manchester area. About 100 buildings were damaged on Thursday evening, the PA news agency reported.
Britain’s Met Office weather service would not determine whether it was a tornado, but said it was likely. Photos in the British media showed some houses with covered roofs.
Power cuts and traffic chaos in parts of Britain
Storm “Gerrit” also caused damage in other parts of Britain, bringing snow, wind and rain, some of which led to serious traffic disruption. Scotland was particularly hard hit. Thousands of households were temporarily without power.
A number of train connections were canceled and some routes were completely closed. Flights at London’s Heathrow Airport were also canceled due to the storm.
