Between New Year’s Eve and New Year’s Day in Venice and Trieste there is a risk of high fines for consuming drinks in public. Lagoon City Mayor Luigi Brugnaro has signed a decree to protect public safety on New Year’s Eve.
From December 31 to January 1, 2024 at 6am, there is a ban on shops, bars and outdoor stalls selling and serving drinks, including alcohol and spirits, in glass bottles, sealed cans or plastic bottles.
Fines of up to 500 euros can be imposed
It is also forbidden to consume any drink on the street. The use and possession of pepper spray is also prohibited. Failure to comply with this regulation is punishable by a fine of between 25 euros and 500 euros, the municipality of Venice announced.
Similar measures were also taken in Trieste. Glass bottles and alcoholic drinks are prohibited in the central Piazza Unità d’Italia on New Year’s Eve. This is laid down in a regulation of the city council. Taking or possessing items such as umbrellas, folding chairs, selfie sticks and pepper spray is also prohibited.
