In Sattledt (Upper Austria) it was uncertain what consequences a fire in a house would have; it could have ended badly. A savior without charisma and grace ensured that everything ended well.
“That should go without saying,” a dedicated firefighter almost downplayed his rescue operation Thursday in Sattledt. The emergency worker was actually off duty and coming from his girlfriend’s house when he stopped his car at an intersection and saw black smoke billowing hundreds of meters away. “That seemed strange to me, so I went there straight away,” he says in an interview with “Krone”. An Advent wreath caught fire on the ground floor terrace of an apartment building.
Rescuer wants to remain anonymous
“There were a few people standing around, so I rang the doorbell everywhere and got people out,” says the firefighter, who wants to remain anonymous. Because it was just after 10 a.m., some residents were still in their pajamas. The man grabbed a fire extinguisher from the stairs and ran into the garden. The fire had already spread to the facade and the windows of the patio doors were already broken. However, at that time it was still unclear whether there were still people in the fire apartment.
The neighbor had a key to the apartment
Meanwhile, a neighbor had received a key to the affected apartment. “We rang the doorbell several times, but no one responded. But the neighbor said that someone had to be there because the car was in front of the house,” said the emergency worker.
The owner’s son was indeed in the apartment, but he slept well and did not notice the operation. The alarmed emergency services eventually entered the apartment with the key and were able to rescue the sleeping man and his cat “Josy” unharmed from the smoke-filled building. The emergency services quickly completed the extinguishing work on the terrace.
