Due to the generally increased risk situation in Austria, the Vienna New Year’s Eve route will be strictly controlled by the police. Searches and access controls will also be carried out, as the Ministry of the Interior and the Directorate for State Security and Intelligence (DSN) announced on Friday.
Like every year, the New Year will be celebrated again this year in the center of Vienna with the famous New Year’s Eve route. As hundreds of thousands of people celebrate the New Year in Vienna, the police will once again be present in the city.
The officers will be dressed in uniforms, with special equipment and long weapons, as well as in civilian clothes, the press service announced on Friday. The police are also conducting searches on the New Year’s Eve path.
Increased terror alert level
In addition to incidents and accidents at home, numerous incidents also occur, especially in public, due to, among other things, the use of pyrotechnic objects. Furthermore, there is still a general increased risk in Austria this year due to a current threat assessment by the Office for the Protection of the Constitution and the continued increased level of terror alert. Particular attention is therefore paid to the New Year’s Eve route in the center of Vienna, as Interior Minister Gerhard Karner (ÖVP) emphasized during a press conference on Friday.
Access controls and searches
To achieve this, additional troops from the states of Lower Austria, Salzburg, Carinthia and Burgenland will be called in for support. The protective measures required there are carried out in close cooperation with the organizer.
The security personnel deployed on the New Year’s Eve route will carry out access controls. In addition, the Vienna State Police Directorate announced that it was also authorized to conduct searches.
