German transport politician Thomas Bareiß (CDU) has called for higher compensation for train delays. “We now need compensation that really compensates those affected and at the same time hurts the railway and encourages us to do better,” he said literally.
In the future, 50 percent of the travel price should be refunded for a delay of up to two hours, 75 percent for a delay of two hours or more, “and for a delay of four hours or more, the entire travel price must be refunded.” said Bareiß to the newspaper “Rheinische Post.” Train passengers currently receive a quarter of the fare back for 60 minutes and half of a single ticket for a delay of more than two hours.
The Vice-Chairman of the Union Parliamentary Group also demanded that seat reservations be refunded in case of cancellations. So far they have been excluded from this. “The reservation fees become a non-compensatory source of revenue for the railways. This practice must end.”
