Very lucky – dog fell 70 meters – and was rescued

Date:

‘Gaia’ pulled herself free from the leash. A drone was able to locate the injured boarder collie. He was rescued by mountain rescuers from St. Gilgen.

A fallen dog was located on the Schafberg in St. Gilgen (Flachgau) on Tuesday by a fire brigade drone and rescued from steep rocky terrain by mountain rescuers during an extensive rescue operation. The boarder collie of a Czech holidaying family broke free from its leash above the middle station on Monday afternoon, fell over a 70-metre-high rock face and has been missing ever since, Salzburg’s mountain rescue service said.

The emergency services were able to track the slightly injured ‘Gaia’ to her happy owners on Tuesday at 4 p.m. The family had the dog’s minor injuries medically examined at a veterinary clinic. Members of the St. Gilgen Mountain Rescue Center, three mountain rescue dog handlers and a dog handler from the missing dog unit took part in the search. “14 fire brigade members from the Mondseeland drone group and a professional hunter supported us in the search,” says Estolf Müller, manager of mountain rescue operations, who was also involved in the search with his dog.

“We finally discovered traces of a dog at the top of the so-called Kesselbachgraben,” Müller explains. With the help of drone flights, the fire brigade was able to locate a dog under rocks on the thermal imaging camera under a steep rock wall around 1 p.m. The injured and scared dog had hidden under rocks. Saving the dog on the extremely steep, rocky, partly icy and avalanche-prone terrain was a challenge.
