Israeli drones reportedly attacked a Hamas office in the Lebanese capital Beirut on Tuesday. Lebanese security officials say Hamas’s second-most important man has been killed.
There was a violent explosion in Beirut on Tuesday. According to local police, this happened in a southern district where the Shia Hezbollah militia is particularly well represented.
Video footage showed at least one car on fire near a busy street. Ambulance sirens could also be heard. The background to the explosion and whether there were any deaths or injuries was initially unclear.
News agency AFP reports, citing state media, that it was an Israeli drone attack. According to Lebanese security officials, Hamas’s second most important man was killed.
“Murder”
Saleh al-Aruri was killed along with his bodyguards in the attack on the Hamas office south of Beirut, a senior security official told the AFP news agency on Tuesday. Shortly afterwards, the Hamas TV station reported the “murder” of al-Arouri.
“The vice president of the Hamas Political Bureau, Sheikh Saleh al-Aruri, was tortured during a Zionist attack in Beirut,” Hamas announced on its official television channel, al-Aqsa TV, and other media.
