Hype about AI tools like ChatGPT and big data algorithms for recognizing and generating images: the future, it seems, is characterized by intelligent machines. But so far they have mainly been tied to data centers: the ‘intelligence’ is not at home on mobile phones or PCs, but in the cloud. A new type of processor could change that and make complex algorithms computable in even the smallest smart home device.
In a sense, they are the holy grail of the global AI industry: so-called NPUs. ChatGPT maker OpenAI recently presented a letter of intent in which it announced that it would purchase AI processors from start-up Rain Neuromorphics for more than $50 million once work on the wonder chip is completed. Fired and recalled OpenAI boss Sam Altman even invested a million dollars from his private wealth in the California start-up. He hopes for nothing other than a technological revolution.
