An Austrian ski tourer was seriously injured in an avalanche on the Peitlerkofel in South Tyrol on Tuesday. The 50-year-old was dragged about 300 meters by the snow masses while climbing and suffered polytrauma.
As South Tyrolean media reported, the winter sports enthusiast was climbing with crampons through the northern gully of the Peitlerkofel in the South Tyrolean Dolomites when the avalanche broke out. He was swept away by the snow and ended up in a gully.
His companion, an Austrian who lived in Brixen, alerted the emergency services. Rescuers from the Aiut Alpin Dolomites emergency medical helicopter eventually rescued the man with a winch.
The injured man, who suffered polytrauma, was then flown to hospital in Bolzano. His companion, who had called emergency services, was unharmed in the avalanche on Tuesday afternoon.
