A dramatic accident involving four vehicles took place on the B179, Fernpassstraße, in the municipality of Breitenwang in the Tyrolean district of Reutte on Tuesday evening. A total of eight people were injured, including several children in a minibus. Its driver suffered serious injuries.
The accident happened shortly after 6pm when a German (50) was driving his car south on the Fernpass road. In the municipality of Breitenwang, the German first collided head-on with an oncoming minivan and then with the car behind the minivan. Another driver (28) was driving behind this vehicle. Despite an emergency stop, he was unable to avoid hitting the vehicle in front.
Seriously injured man trapped in car
Several people were injured in the driver’s car and in the minibus. The driver of the bus was trapped in the vehicle and seriously injured. Four children between the ages of seven and 12 who were in the car with him were also injured. The 50-year-old German in the other car escaped with minor injuries, while his passenger and a child were injured to an unspecified degree.
All injured people were taken to the hospital in Reutte. The occupants of the other vehicles involved escaped in horror.
Road completely closed for two hours
All cars suffered significant damage and had to be towed away. Meanwhile, the Fernpass road was closed to all traffic for about two hours.
