A Muslim cleric was shot outside a mosque in the US state of New Jersey. The victim was hospitalized Wednesday morning and is in life-threatening condition, authorities said.
According to US media, the shots were fired shortly after 6:15 am local time. The motive for the attack in the city of Newark, near the New York metropolis, was initially unclear. The perpetrator or perpetrators were on the run.
Hours later, police investigators were seen outside the mosque (see video above). Police confirmed that the person shot was the mosque’s imam.
Since the war between Israel and the radical Islamist Hamas began in early October, both anti-Muslim and anti-Semitic incidents have increased in the United States.
