About thirteen years after military conscription was abolished in Serbia, there is now much talk about the reintroduction of military conscription.
Defense Minister Milos Vucevic reportedly plans to present a corresponding proposal soon. For security reasons, there is an increasing need for recruits who are ready at any time to defend the state, Vucevic told the TV channel Happy on Thursday.
Minister points to trend in Europe
Compulsory military service should only last four months. The minister argued with the proposal that many European countries had reactivated military conscription.
Moreover, Serbian conscription has not been completely abolished, but only suspended, the minister emphasizes. Now he wants to initiate a broad public discussion about it. Ultimately, there should be a Serbian army that can respond to the “new security threats.”
