Presidential election – Trump critic Christie throws in the towel

Date:

Just a few days before the start of the presidential primaries in the US, candidate Chris Christie has now thrown in the towel. The Republican argued that he had realized he had no chance of winning his party’s nomination.

That’s why he’s dropping out of the race for the White House, Christie said Wednesday. At the same time, the 61-year-old warned Republicans not to vote for the much-loved right-wing populist Trump during the primaries. The ex-president is dividing the country, “inciting anger for his own benefit” and putting his own interests above those of the country’s people.

Here you can see a tweet from Chris Christie.

Christie was Trump’s fiercest critic among his party’s candidates. He had already made verbal attacks against the former president, his political trademark. However, in surveys he received an average of only three to four percent of the votes.

Pulling back probably helps Haley
Christie’s withdrawal likely helps former U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations Nikki Haley. She is competing with Florida’s arch-conservative governor, Ron DeSantis, for second place behind Trump (see video about the candidates and the candidate above). The Republican primaries start next Monday in the American state of Iowa and will last several months. The winner will then face incumbent Joe Biden of the Democratic Party on November 5.

According to polls, Trump could get more than 60 percent of the vote nationally. In Iowa, the current figure is 52.3 percent. According to the RealClearPolitics website, Haley and DeSantis each have about 16 percent of the state. While DeSantis (45) is considered a right-wing hardliner, Haley (51) presents himself as a moderate alternative.
