The residents of an apartment complex in Gratwein, Styria, barely escaped the flames on Friday evening. 70 firefighters were deployed and three people were slightly injured.
In the early hours of the morning, a young man stepped out of the shower when he was struck by flames. The apartment on the top floor of an apartment building had started to burn.
The emergency services were alerted shortly after 2 a.m. – when the fire brigade arrived, the apartment was already completely on fire. The luck: “All residents were already in the stairwell, we only had to guide them down,” says operations manager Kevin Stessel of the Gratwein volunteer fire brigade. The young man reacted quickly and alerted the neighbors.
All residents were rescued virtually unharmed. Two people were treated on site for minor injuries and a 17-year-old had to be taken to the LKH Graz children’s clinic for more detailed examination.

“Because the residents were woken up in the middle of the night, they weren’t wearing much – and only had the most important items with them,” says Stessel. Without further ado, she occupied the Schusterbauer inn in Eisbach. Help-seekers were given drinks and rooms so they could “recharge a little bit of warmth and strength,” Stessel said.
The fire was extinguished shortly after 3 a.m. A total of 70 people were deployed with 14 local fire brigade vehicles, as well as five rescue teams. The cause of the fire and the extent of the damage are still unknown. Researchers are working now.
