A 79-year-old suffering from severe dementia is said to have killed an 84-year-old fellow patient at a clinic in the German city of Osnabrück by damaging his cardiac support system. The suspect was arrested and the judge ordered him to be placed in a psychiatric hospital.
As the public prosecutor announced on Friday, the incident took place on Thursday in a geriatric psychiatric ward.
According to the Public Prosecution Service, the motive for the crime is unclear; the 79-year-old therefore suffers from severe dementia. According to the investigation, he allegedly entered the 84-year-old’s room, where he manipulated external batteries and the control unit for the heart support system.
The system that was permanently implanted in the victim no longer worked due to the damage. It did cause an alarm. According to the Public Prosecution Service, all attempts to switch the system back on failed because the technical defect could not be resolved. The 84-year-old died.
