Dramatic scenes on Friday afternoon in Burgenland: A wild family quarrel reportedly broke out in a house in Bad Sauerbrunn. When the alerted police took action against the alleged perpetrator, he allegedly attacked an officer with a machete. Shots were fired – the attacker is dead!
The fatal shot was preceded by a heated discussion around 3 p.m. The conflict is said to have escalated in a family staying near the Kurhaus in Bad Sauerbrunn. Shortly afterwards, alarm bells started ringing in the state security headquarters.
Suspect suddenly grabbed the machete
Police officers were sent to the home address. When two officers wanted to check whether everything was going well, the alleged perpetrator – a 55-year-old man from Germany – probably grabbed a machete and, with the knife raised, attacked his wife and then an officer. A police officer suffered injuries of unknown nature, even though he was wearing a protective vest. The attacker was hit by fatal shots, said spokeswoman for the Public Prosecution Service Petra Bauer: “The suspected perpetrator is dead.”
Several shots were heard in the area
Not only neighbors, but also people walking through the woods heard shots. At first, witnesses thought it was a New Year’s Eve firecracker. Shortly afterwards, the emergency medical helicopter circled above the area and several patrol cars raced through Bad Sauerbrunn.
According to the Burgenland State Police Directorate, it was said in the evening that the police officers who intervened initially asked the attacker to put down the weapon and cooperate. However, the man ignored this and the use of pepper spray had no effect. When the suspect attacked the officers, the emergency workers fired a shot from their service weapon. The attacker was stopped, the rescue chain was activated, but the man died.
The Vienna State Criminal Investigation Department is now investigating
The use of weapons – in particular the number of shots fired, the number of service weapons used and the number of hits on the attacker’s body – are now the subject of the investigation. As planned, these will be managed by officers of the Vienna State Criminal Investigation Department. These internal investigations run parallel to the investigation by the Public Prosecution Service.
