An elderly woman (75) fell victim to fake police officers in Vienna’s Neubau district on Friday. The lady gave the alleged officials a sum of money in the region of six figures. The Viennese police are now warning again about the fraudsters.
An alleged bank advisor called the Austrian woman on Friday and warned that someone had tried to withdraw money from her account. The fraudster announced that a detective would come to her to investigate. After an initial telephone contact, the man actually showed up at the lady’s apartment and pretended to be a police officer.
Handing over valuables to fraudsters
For the 75-year-old, a small odyssey began: the fake police officer instructed the woman that she now had to drive to all the bank branches involved to secure evidence. She withdrew money from various branches and took valuables from the safes there. The pensioner then handed over the valuables to the fraudster, always without the involvement of the banks.
Eventually, the senior became suspicious
After the last transfer, the fake police officer mentioned a bank branch where the 75-year-old had to get all her belongings back. However, this did not happen and the lady became suspicious. She then contacted the real police. Estimated total damage is in the low six-figure range.
The Vienna police warn again about fraudsters
In this context, the Vienna police once again warned about the fraudsters and appealed to protect the elderly in the area, warning again and again about a wide variety of fraudulent schemes of the “fake police officers”.
