The Ukrainian army is under heavy pressure in the far east of the front. Russian troops continued to shell the town of Sievjerodonetsk in the Luhansk region on Thursday. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy accuses Russia of “genocide”.
Moscow has “a clear policy of genocide,” Zelenskyj said in his daily video address on Friday evening. The region could soon become ‘uninhabitable’ for him.
He accused the Russians of wanting to reduce Ukrainian cities to rubble. “All of this, including the kidnapping of our people and the mass murder of civilians, is a blatantly genocidal policy being pursued by Russia.”
US and Canada Support Statement
US President Joe Biden expressed similar sentiments, saying that Putin “seems to want to eradicate the idea that you can even be Ukrainian”. Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau reiterated this statement.
Attack without success
However, Thursday’s attack on the city of Sievjerodonetsk and the suburb of Borivske was said to have failed. Military information, however, was not independently verifiable.
In another nearby village, in Ustynivka, the Russian side is said to have won a partial victory. The Russian troops tried to limit the mobility of the Ukrainian troops by shelling bridges. The Seversky Donets River flows through the disputed area.
City of Lyman lost
The major cities of Sieverodonetsk and Lysychansk are currently the extreme outposts of Ukraine to the east. But there is also fighting at the back of these cities, threatening Ukrainian troops with impeachment. On the north side of this possible pocket, the city of Lyman has been lost, presidential adviser Oleksiy Arestovych confirmed on Ukrainian television.
According to general staff information, Ukrainian positions south of Lyman are now being shelled.
Russia reformats troops
On the south side of the possible pocket, there was fighting for the towns of Komyshuvakha, Nirkove and Berestove. Here too it was said that the attacks had been repulsed. However, the Russians had achieved partial success near Pokrovske.
According to military information, Ukraine also observes that Russia is regrouping troops in its border areas of Belgorod and Voronezh. This means that further attacks on the Ukrainian regions of Kharkiv and Luhansk are to be feared.
