The vast majority of European countries have a legislated inter-professional minimum wage, which is usually adjusted every year to address price inflation.
The increase in 2023 of interprofessional minimum wage (SMI) 8%, up to 1080 euros per month in 14 payments (1260 in 12 payments), places Spain already in seventh place among European countries based on minimum wage France in sixth place with 1,709 euros, after an increase of 3.87% last year. The classification is guided by Luxembourgwith 2387 euros, and close it Bulgariawith 398 euros.
According to the latest data from Eurostat, corresponding to 2023, are, in addition to Luxembourg, in the high range of the European Union countries Germany (1,987 euros gross in 12 payments), Belgium (1,955 euros), the Netherlands (1,934 euros), Ireland (1,909 euros) and France (1,709 euros). It should be noted that in Germany the minimum wage has increased by 14.86% this year.
Spain takes first place in the intermediate level of the classification, surpassing Slovenia, which occupied that seventh position and with a minimum salary of 1,203 euros.
The third group of states, with minimum wages of less than 1000 euros gross per month, consists in addition to Bulgaria of countries such as Cyprus (940 euros in 12 payments), Portugal (886 euros), Greece (831 euros), Romania (606 euros) and Hungary (578 euros).
It should be remembered that the EU Statistical Office speaks of a minimum remuneration in twelve payments and not in fourteen, as this is how it is perceived in most states. Not all EU member states have a statutory minimum wage: Denmark, Italy, Austria, Finland and Sweden, among others, determine the SMI through collective wage negotiations.
Cyprus, in turn, incorporated the SMI into its legislation in 2023.
