The damage to the liquefied gas pipeline in the German state of Schleswig-Holstein, where several boreholes were discovered at the end of November, is apparently much greater than initially assumed. The line is said to have been breached in at least eight places. The suspicion of sabotage is confirmed!
According to German media reports, the Federal Prosecutor’s Office investigation has so far shown that the previously unknown perpetrators arrived with special exercises. The holes they drilled were barely visible from the outside because the plastic casing had retracted after drilling, Spiegel reports. The drilled areas were only discovered during electronic checks. According to a preliminary estimate, the damage should amount to around 1.6 million euros.
Damage after climate protests
The ‘ETL 180’ pipeline, which is still under construction and is 55 kilometers long, is intended to connect liquefied natural gas imported by ship from the terminal in Brunsbüttel to the German natural gas network. The LNG pipeline was originally scheduled to be completed by the end of 2023, but delivery was repeatedly postponed – including due to protests from climate activists.
As a result, construction equipment was damaged. According to Spiegel, workers also found sawn tubular elements on another occasion.
