It was a dramatic incident that took place late Monday afternoon in an apartment in Kirchberg in Tyrol (Kitzbühel district): a three-year-old boy got caught in the circuit while handling a lamp and lost consciousness. The child had to be resuscitated. He remains in intensive care. An expert describes what you should do in such an emergency.
The horrific incident took place at the home of an apartment complex shortly after 5pm on Monday. “While handling a floor lamp, the three-year-old child became entangled in the electrical circuit and lost consciousness,” police said.
The boy’s mother fought for the life of the little one with resuscitation measures, who was eventually revived by emergency services. The child was then flown to the clinic in Innsbruck by emergency helicopter.
Child is still in intensive care, condition ‘stable’
As clinic spokesperson Johannes Schwamberger explained to the “Krone” on Wednesday morning, the three-year-old is still in intensive care. “But his condition is stable. He will continue to be monitored.”
What to do in an emergency
Fortunately, electrical accidents are much rarer today than before due to many technical aids – such as child safety locks for sockets – says chief doctor Thomas Fluckinger of the Tyrolean Red Cross. If something does happen, it is important to act quickly, but do not forget about self-protection.
“Turn off the fuse, pull out the cable, so that you as a rescuer do not become entangled in the circuit,” the doctor emphasizes. In the second step, checking the signs of life is important: “Start rescue breathing and chest compressions if necessary. And of course call the emergency number.” An electrical accident can have various consequences, including cardiac arrest. In general, the younger the child, the more sensitive he or she is.
