Preparations for a possible war must be made as quickly as possible. “Everyone must understand that in the situation we find ourselves in, time can be our most valuable resource,” the 38-year-old emphasized.
Prepare communities for emergencies
The politician from the conservative Moderate Collection Party gave several examples of how to prepare for an emergency: local authorities must develop emergency water plans and guarantee the supply of food, heat and electricity. Emergency authorities must recruit volunteers to expand their work in the event of war. Individuals should consider joining a voluntary defense organization.
Minister Bohlin sees the Ukrainian population, which has been defending itself against the Russian invasion since February 2022, as a model for a society that can defend itself against an attack. In previous years, Ukraine had already prepared for an all-out war with Russia. “We are a people and a society facing a total war with total resistance,” was the Ukrainian response to the invasion, the Swedish politician said.
Such a united resistance is only possible “if the vast majority are aware of the situation and understand what it is about,” Bohlin explains. The Swedes must therefore become clear about their situation.
Hope for early accession to NATO
Impressed by Russia’s war of aggression, Sweden, which was previously non-aligned, made a U-turn in defense policy in May 2022 and applied for NATO membership.
