Under American mediation, Israel agreed to a UN mission in the Gaza Strip

Date:

The Israeli government has agreed to a UN mission to assess the situation in the northern Gaza Strip with a view to the safe return of displaced persons. “Today we agreed on a plan for the United Nations to conduct an assessment mission,” US Secretary of State Antony Blinken said on Tuesday.

The mission will determine “what needs to be done so that displaced Palestinians can return safely to the north,” he said in Tel Aviv. It is important to “prevent further damage to the civilian population and protect civilian infrastructure in Gaza.” Blinken also called on the Israeli government to “stop taking measures that undermine the Palestinians’ ability to govern themselves.” Israel must “cooperate” with a Palestinian leadership. that is willing to support its people to live in peace side by side with Israel.

Blinken visits Israel for the fourth time since the start of the war in Gaza. The politician tries to de-escalate the conflict. On Monday he was in Saudi Arabia and spoke with Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman about rapprochement with Israel, among other things. On Tuesday he spoke to Israeli President Yitzhak Herzog and Defense Minister Yoav Galant, among others (see video above).

“Tireless efforts” for hostages
Times for Israel are “incredibly challenging” and there are “endless efforts to bring all (hostages, note) home,” Blinken said after the talks. Galant explained that the military operation in the region of the city of Khan Younis in the southern Gaza Strip would be intensified until the Hamas leadership was discovered in the Gaza Strip and the hostages returned home safely.

Regarding Hezbollah in Lebanon, the Defense Minister announced that Israel preferred a diplomatic solution but was also prepared to take military action. In addition, pressure on Iran must be increased to prevent escalation, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s office said.

Right to defend yourself
Blinken noted that Israel has the right to prevent another attack by the terrorist organization Hamas. The war began on October 7 with a major attack on Israel by Hamas and other extremist groups. According to Israeli figures, 1,140 people were killed, some brutally, and around 250 others were abducted to the Gaza Strip.

The Israeli army then began attacking the Gaza Strip. According to Hamas, more than 23,210 people have been killed so far. Aid organizations are always concerned about the civilian population.
