The Chinese army is carrying out new naval maneuvers on Saturday. According to the Chinese Maritime Security Authority, an area of 100 square kilometers will be cordoned off for five hours. The US and Australia fear that China may want to establish a military base on the islands in the Pacific Ocean.
However, China often postpones such maneuvers, as is currently the case in the South China Sea. “Military exercises will take place and entry is prohibited,” Chinese officials said. In concrete terms, an area of about 100 square kilometers will be closed to shipping for five hours. It wasn’t until Tuesday that Russian and Chinese troops conducted joint patrol flights in the Asia-Pacific region. Areas of the Sea of Japan and the East China Sea were flown over, and strategic bombers from both countries were also involved.
Military maneuvers announced near Hainan
Another maneuver will take place near Hainan next week. According to US Secretary of State Antony Blinken, there are planes from the Chinese Air Force in Taiwan almost every day. He fears that China wants to shift the military balance in the region and has already called on the international community to counter these efforts.
Agreement with ten island states
Australian Foreign Secretary Penny Wong, for his part, warns of the regional implications of a security pact between Pacific islands such as the Solomon Islands and China. A comprehensive agreement is planned with ten island states on trade and security, for which Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi arrived in Kiribati on Friday. According to him, the pact aims, among other things, to help states in their police action and to protect the safety of citizens. It is not China’s intention to build a military base there.
