In Queensland, Australia, one of the most venomous snakes in the world bit a woman while she was sleeping. She was fortunate that she was able to immediately treat her family and call a rescue helicopter. The young Australian’s condition is serious but stable.
An eastern brown snake attacked a woman in bed in the rural town of Glenmorgan on Friday evening, the ABC reported. One photo showed the snake’s head sticking out from under the blanket. The venomous snakes are considered the most venomous snakes on earth and live only in Australia and New Guinea. In Australia, an average of one to two people die each year from snakebites, mainly from attacks by the eastern brown snake, which is found in most of the country.
Doctor: “Frightening situation”
However, the young woman in Queensland was lucky. “The family members held the patient’s hand very still and wrapped it tightly in a snake bandage to prevent the poison from spreading to the center of the body,” ABC quoted an emergency doctor as saying. She is now being treated in hospital in the nearest major city, Toowoomba. Her condition is serious but stable.
“In my experience, it is very unusual to be bitten while sleeping,” the doctor said. This is a “terrifying situation.” According to local emergency services, snake bites are currently increasing due to the warm weather. Last week there were about 30 missions throughout the country.
