Following the incident involving a Boeing aircraft in which part of the fuselage broke off during flight, the US aviation authority FAA is now conducting detailed inspections of the company.
The circumstances indicate that the aircraft manufacturer may have neglected its duties in production, inspections and testing, according to a letter to Boeing published on Thursday.
Last weekend, the FAA ordered the grounding and inspection of Boeing 737-9 Max aircraft. In the model variant, the part closes a door opening that is not necessary.
What happened before: During an Alaska Airlines flight last Friday, the part suddenly tore off shortly after takeoff while climbing. The machine had only recently been delivered.
Loose fasteners detected
During subsequent inspections, Alaska and United Airlines also found loose fasteners on other aircraft of this type. The industry website “The Air Current” reported that United had experienced such problems on about 15 planes alone.
“The incident must not happen again”
The FAA gave Boeing ten business days to explain the situation to the investigation. The FAA expects information about the causes of the incident and the measures taken, among other things. The incident should not have happened and should not happen again.
After the FAA letter, Boeing reiterated that it would cooperate transparently with the aviation authority and the accident investigation agency NTSB.
In the incident, about 170 passengers escaped in horror, even though there was a hole in the fuselage. At the same time, experts pointed out that by a fortunate coincidence, the two seats directly next to the broken-out part of the fuselage remained empty.
