Two days after the Texas school massacre, the husband of one of the teachers who died, Irma Garcia (46), also died. Joe Garcia died of a heart attack. His family spoke of a death “from grief”. Media also referred to the so-called Broken Hearts Syndrome – deaths caused by stress, tension and a “broken heart”. The 50-year-old had just visited a makeshift memorial to the victims to lay flowers. When he got home, he just fell over. The couple had been married for 24 years and had four children.

Police had to slow down parents
In fact, the police’s actions are increasingly criticized. The gunman spent an hour in the classroom where he shot 19 children and two teachers. Only then did reinforcements arrive and storm the room. While some police officers rescued students from a window, others rioted against desperate parents, who asked the uniformed men to intervene. A mother of two students was even handcuffed for “interfering with an ongoing investigation.” A desperate father also had to be wrestled to the ground by officials. Another was sedated with pepper spray. When her handcuffs were removed, the mother jumped over a fence and picked her children up from school herself.
