E-cars are on the rise: in Upper Austria the share of new registrations rose to 21.7 percent last year, 43 times as high as in 2015. Austria’s frontrunners could not be more different: Vienna’s city center is followed by the Rohrbach district comes in second.
In 2023, almost 8,300 new electric cars were registered in Upper Austria, which is 2,000 more than the previous year. “They are well received in both the city and the countryside,” says VCÖ expert Lisa Mosshammer.
Only Vienna before Rohrbach
Particularly interesting: In Austria as a whole, only in the inner city of Vienna (32.9 percent) are there percentage-wise more electric cars on the road than in the Rohrbach district (31.2 percent) in the Mühlviertel.
Electric vehicles are also particularly popular in the districts of Kirchdorf (29.3 percent) and Ried (27.8 percent), which share space with the Viennese districts of Ottakring and Mariahilf.
More electric cars than diesel cars
This means that electric cars overtook diesel cars in terms of new registrations last year in 13 districts in Upper Austria and in the statutory city of Steyr. In this context, the Austrian Transport Club warns against making the same mistakes with electric cars as with diesel cars.
Don’t repeat mistakes
The CO2 emissions of electric cars also increase with the size and weight of the vehicle. “Overweight and overpowered models worsen the energy and environmental balance of electric cars,” the mobility club warns.
