Israeli soldiers have arrested two sisters of the deputy head of the radical Islamist Hamas, Saleh al-Arouri, who was killed in Lebanon in the occupied West Bank. The Israeli military said the two women were arrested for calling for “terrorism against the State of Israel.” The army provided no details.
The brother-in-law of Hamas deputy chief Aouad al-Arouri said the two women and several other family members had been taken into Israeli administrative detention.
Son reports arrest
The Palestinian Prisoners Association said 52-year-old Dalal al-Arouri and 47-year-old Fatima al-Arouri were arrested at separate locations near Ramallah. Fatima al-Arouri’s son Mohammed Saqr said his mother was arrested before dawn during an army operation in her neighborhood.
Deputy head of Hamas killed in attack on Israel on January 2
Arouri and six other Hamas representatives were killed on January 2 in an attack attributed to Israel in a suburb of the Lebanese capital Beirut. The 57-year-old was considered a key military strategist for Hamas and one of its leaders in the West Bank. Israel accuses him of planning numerous attacks. He is also said to have been involved in the planning of the attack on Israel on October 7.
On October 7, fighters from Hamas, which is classified as a terrorist organization by the US and EU, brutally attacked Israel, killing around 1,140 people and abducting around 250 to the Gaza Strip.
In response to the unprecedented attack, Israel declared war on Hamas and launched a large-scale military operation in the Gaza Strip. More than 23,900 people have been killed there since then, according to the Hamas Health Ministry, which cannot be independently verified.
