Murder of a teenager (14) – 27 years after the crime: life imprisonment for 2 men

Date:

Two men in Scotland have been sentenced to life in prison for the murder of a girl more than 27 years ago. The 14-year-old’s then boyfriend must serve a minimum of 22 years in prison, while the other may not be released until after 18 years, a court in Glasgow ruled on Monday.

The men – now aged 45 and 44 – were found guilty in December last year. The verdict was announced on Monday.

According to court records, Robert O’Brien and Andrew Kelly (pictured above) lured the teenager to a path next to a river in August 1996 and repeatedly punched, kicked and threw rocks at her.

Eventually the girl fell into the river and drowned. The verdict against a third suspect, who has already been convicted, is expected in March.

Mother relieved after guilty verdict
As a school friend of the victim testified, the then-boyfriend was jealous and threatened to kill the girl. The judge described the act as ‘brutal, depraved and above all evil’. The victim’s mother expressed relief after the guilty verdict in December. She said she finally had certainty.
