UN Security Council – Putin’s mouthpiece Lavrov travels to New York

Date:

Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov will travel to New York for the UN Security Council meetings from January 22 to 24. Putin’s mouthpiece mainly wants to comment on the conflict in the Middle East and the war in Ukraine – no progress is expected.

In the Middle East, the focus should be on finding ways out of the comprehensive crisis caused by the escalated conflict between Israel and the Palestinians, ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova announced in Moscow on Wednesday.

There is a need for ‘disarmament’ of Ukraine
On Ukraine, Lavrov wants to convey the Russian perspective to the world audience – including ways to find a political solution “that takes into account legitimate Russian security interests.” By legitimate security interest, Russia means its demand for the “disarmament” of Ukraine and for a neutral status for the country.

Russia has been waging war against Ukraine for almost two years and has declared the conquered areas its territory. From Moscow’s perspective, a return is out of the question. Ukraine is trying to regain its territory. With few exceptions, the international community does not recognize Russia’s 2022 annexations or the 2014 annexation of Crimea.
