The Federal Army’s report on the terrible tank accident that killed a non-commissioned officer (24) from Ried im Innkreis (Upper Austria) is now ready. “Our investigation revealed no indications of a technical problem,” said Army spokesman Michael Bauer. Therefore, significant changes in processes are not necessary.
We examined whether internal processes or regulations need to be adjusted. Apart from minor recommendations and adjustments, this is not the case, according to Bauer. The spokesperson emphasized that no research has been conducted into the criminal relevance. Now it is the turn of the Krems Public Prosecutor’s Office, which is investigating suspicions of negligent homicide.
One dead, three injured
In the accident on October 16, 2023, a “Leopard” 2A4 from Panzer Battalion 14 from Wels left the road in the Seebrücke area and fell over an embankment. A 24-year-old career sergeant from the Ried im Innkreis district died. Three other soldiers – also from Upper Austria – were slightly injured.
The 24-year-old held the position of commander during the trip. During the accident he became trapped between the tank and the ground.
