A glowing ball slowly falls from the sky – stunning observers in Lower Austria on Thursday morning. Is this space junk or even a meteorite? Or is there a completely different explanation? Kroon.at has investigated the matter.
The fireball slowly slides to the ground and disappears. Shortly afterwards all that is visible is a cloud of smoke. This was seen and captured on video in Leobersdorf shortly before 10 a.m. on Thursday.
krone.at did some research and soon found out: it is certainly not a meteorite, because: “A meteorite would be much faster and therefore visible in an almost straight line in the sky,” says Christian Möstl, head of the Austrian space weather. Office geosphere.
Illuminated grenades fired
In fact, it is a light grenade that the Federal Army fired from the Tritolwerk disaster response training area for training purposes. “This happens over and over again during exercises,” said Army spokesman Michael Bauer.
The light grenades do not contain explosives, but rather a pyrotechnic device. After launching, it will slowly glide to the ground with the help of a parachute, illuminating “everything below it,” Bauer says.
