Because the Bernese Mountain Dog “Kira” had escaped, a man from Anthering near Salzburg drove through the village streets at 3 a.m. on Friday. Suddenly he saw a light in a ditch – and with it he probably saved a woman’s life.
In the Reintal district of Anthering there is hardly anyone on the street at 3am. A woman who fell there on Friday found herself in a dramatic situation. Her car left the road and ended up in a ditch, trapping the woman.
Bernese Mountain Dog “Kira” escaped
It was extremely fortunate that shortly afterwards a retiree from the community passed by the sloping property looking for his dog. “Our dog ‘Kira’ has escaped. When he was not back after closing time, I went looking for him,” Gerhard Zwifl told the “Krone”.
Luckily the car’s headlights were still on
Normally he wouldn’t have seen the crashed car at all. Only because the headlights were still on did the dog owner see a glow of light in the ditch. He scrambled down, saw the crashed car, but couldn’t open the door. The car was probably locked. The Antheringer immediately called the police and spoke to the woman who was hanging upside down in the seat belt.
“We found the vehicle on its side. Only when we removed the windshield were we able to rescue the trapped woman,” describes Andreas Leberer, head of operations at the Anthering fire brigade. He and thirty members were involved in the operation for an hour. “That was really lucky,” he says. The rescue service took the driver to hospital with injuries.
Dog is fine
Without his dog, Gerhard Zwifl would not have been on the street at night. Eight-year-old “Kira” was already back home when her owner discovered the driver.
