In light of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, the three Baltic states have agreed to build new defenses on their borders with Belarus and Russia.
The Estonian Ministry of Defense said on Friday that the countries’ ministers had signed an agreement in Riga according to which “Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania want to build defense facilities to limit mobility in the coming years.”
The aim is to “deter and, if necessary, defend military threats,” the Estonian Ministry of Defense continued. The ground “elements” would be “positioned in the landscape taking into account the results of the analysis of the enemy’s intentions, the environment and the defense plan,” the report said. No further information about the facilities was provided.
“The Russian war in Ukraine has shown that in addition to equipment, ammunition and personnel, physical defense facilities are also needed,” Estonian Defense Minister Hanno Pevkur said, according to his ministry’s statement.
His Latvian counterpart Andris Spruds said on the online service
Latvia and Lithuania have borders with both Russia and Belarus, Estonia shares a border with Russia. The Baltic states have been staunch supporters of Ukraine since the beginning of the Russian invasion.
