Confiscation planned – Moscow wants to punish “false information about the army” more severely

Date:

Anyone in Russia who expresses an opinion about the war of aggression in Ukraine risks long prison sentences. Now there is a risk of further trouble for anyone spreading alleged false information about the military: Parliament is preparing a law that would allow the state to seize money and property.

The measures should also apply to people guilty of other forms of treason, influential Duma Chairman Vyacheslav Volodin said on Saturday. These include discrediting the armed forces, calling for sanctions against Russia and inciting extremist activities.

Defendant must “pay damages”
“Anyone who tries to destroy Russia, who betrays it, must receive the punishment he deserves and pay for the damage he has caused to the country, even at the expense of his own assets,” Volodin wrote on the short-messaging service Telegram. The bill will be presented to the lower house, the Duma, on Monday.

Since invading Ukraine in February 2022, Russia has intensified its crackdown on all forms of political opposition. Long prison sentences were imposed for discrediting the military or spreading false information about it.
