For Pope Francis, having children is a duty of survival. “We must take the birth issue seriously because the future of our homeland is at stake,” the head of the Catholic Church said on Saturday.
The Pope is apparently concerned about the birth rate in some Mediterranean countries. Anyone can have a dog, but it is necessary to have children, Francis told representatives of an association that aims to support small and medium-sized communities in Italy.
“Culture of depopulation”
There is a ‘culture of depopulation’. In this context, the Pope spoke about the inequality of opportunities for residents of rural areas. Although they make up a significant portion of the population, for financial reasons they do not have the same resources as people in larger communities. This creates a vicious circle: a lack of opportunities would force the business part to leave these areas. Only the elderly and people without alternatives would be left behind. The need for social assistance is increasing, but resources are decreasing.
Abortion “contract murder”
In connection with the slogan ‘depopulation’, the Pope also recalled the environment that is affected by it. “In the vulnerability of people and the environment, we recognize that everything is connected.” When looking for solutions, different phenomena must be looked at together.
The Pope’s declaration that it is obligatory to have children follows a series of statements on the subject. For example, he compared abortions to “hiring a hitman” and described surrogacy as “deplorable” because it violates the dignity of the woman and child. “A child is always a gift and never an object of a contract,” he said in early January. Two years ago, the Pope criticized childless couples (see video above).
