What started as a traffic accident with a very tragic outcome, grew into a major fire brigade operation in Hollabrunn in Lower Austria. A motorist drove his car off the road on Saturday evening and came to a stop against a building in the shopping area. The vehicle caught fire…
The accident happened around 2 a.m. and had a devastating outcome. As reported by the Lower Austria State Police Headquarters, the 60-year-old drove straight in the car on a left turn. The car fell over a steep slope and then with great force against the rear part of the company complex. The car “came to rest on its roof and should immediately start to burn,” police said.
Stuck in the burning car
The 60-year-old was trapped in the burning car and was unable to free himself, it was said. “The driver of the car died at the accident site,” explains Wolfgang Thürr of the Hollabrunn district fire brigade. When the first firefighters arrived at the accident site, the fire had already spread to the building.
Big fire attack
Because the flames had spread all over the roof in a very short time, the highest alarm level was called. Ultimately, a total of 15 fire brigades were deployed to contain and extinguish the large fire. The helpers fought the flames from within and without. “These measures took effect quickly and after a few minutes the fire was under control,” says Thürr.
The last embers could then have been detected and extinguished with a thermal camera.
