Rwanda plan – Sunak’s new asylum law has still not been ratified

Date:

British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak is making no progress with his new asylum law. On Monday evening, the House of Lords provisionally did not ratify the treaty with Rwanda. This means that the vote on the law will now likely be postponed.

The House of Commons approved the asylum law last week (see video above). Sunak then warned the House of Lords, the lower house of parliament, which consists of some 800 members, not to stand in the way of the will of the lower house – apparently in vain.

The Conservative government’s draft states that migrants who come to Britain irregularly will be deported to Rwanda, regardless of their origin. They would have to ask for asylum in the East African country. A return to Great Britain is not possible. For the project, Rwanda must be declared a safe third country by law. However, critics accuse the country of human rights violations.

Safety requirements are not met
A report recommended not signing the contract until all safety requirements had been met. The responsible committee of the Senate agreed with the report. Despite the vote, the House of Lords is not expected to ultimately block the treaty or the law.

The schedule can simply be postponed. It is possible that the law will not be implemented again before the next parliamentary elections. The social-democratic Labor Party is currently leading in the polls. She has already announced that she will not continue with the Rwanda plan.
